CILT(UK) Publishes Guide for Transport Sector Response
Supporting Transport Workers After Traumatic Incidents
Traumatic events such as fatal collisions, serious workplace accidents, and suicides can have a profound emotional impact on those involved in the transport and logistics sector. The effects often extend beyond the immediate incident, affecting drivers, warehouse staff, managers, witnesses, and families. Understanding how to respond effectively is crucial for reducing long-term harm and supporting recovery.
CILT(UK) Publishes ‘Back on the Road’ Guidance
The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport UK (CILT UK) has released a guide titled Back on the road, designed to assist managers, teams, and anyone affected by traumatic incidents. Officially launched by CILT(UK)’s Transport and Logistics Safety Forum (TLSF) at its annual conference on 5 February, the guide provides practical advice on immediate responses, typical emotional reactions over time, and ways organisations can offer compassionate support.
Purpose and Content of the Guide
The guide is not intended as an investigation manual or a substitute for professional care. Instead, it offers a framework to help people respond humanely when such incidents occur. It includes case studies based on real-life experiences, reflecting the perspectives of colleagues who have been directly affected by tragic events. Glen Davies, Chair of CILT(UK)’s Transport & Logistics Safety Forum, emphasised that the guide aims to communicate clearly and empathetically: “This is what you might feel, this is what you can do to help, and this is where you can turn for support. It’s written by the industry, for the industry, with input from a range of stakeholders and colleagues. ”
Encouraging Sector-Wide Adoption
CILT(UK)’s TLSF is urging employers, managers, and safety leaders across the transport and logistics sector to read, share, and integrate the guidance within their organisations. Preparing for the reality of traumatic incidents and responding with care can help reduce long-term harm and support colleagues and families in moving forward.
Back on the Road Is available to download from the CILT UK website. The TLSF continues to collaborate with industry partners to promote improved post-incident support and foster safer, more compassionate workplaces.
