ADR Training – Tanks Module

Table of Contents

Background

The ADR qualification is required for drivers who transport dangerous goods. These are goods ‘classified’ as dangerous by the ADR Agreement itself.

Drivers are required to be qualified, and hold the certificate for, the relevant modules for the goods they will be transporting. These modules are Core, Packages, Tanks, Classes 1 – 9.

In this article we will discuss the Tanks module.

What is the Tanks module

When transporting dangerous goods in tanks (including tank-vehicles or tank-containers), drivers must be in possession of an ADR certificate that includes the Tanks module.

The Tanks module gives drivers the knowledge and understanding of the different types of tanks, including an overview of safety systems installed. The module also includes a generic insight into how tanks are loaded and discharged/emptied, taking dangers such as the build up of static, and possible static discharge, into consideration.

The Tanks module includes:

  • The specific additional provisions applicable to the use of Tanks
  • The specific requirements of the vehicles
  • The procedures to be followed in relation to the operation of tanks and tank containers
  • Knowledge of the various and different filling and discharge systems
  • The behaviour of vehicles, tankers and tank containers on the road, including movements of the load
  • What to do in the case of an incident or accident.

The full syllabus and more details can be found in the ADR Course Guide.

Do I need the Tanks module

The Tanks module must be passed by drivers who transport dangerous goods in tanks (including tank-vehicles and tank-containers).

When carrying out ADR training and in order to gain a valid ADR certificate, at least the Packages or Tanks module must be taken.
