ADR Training – Class 2 Gases

Table of Contents

Background

The ADR qualification is required for drivers who transport dangerous goods. These are goods ‘classified’ as dangerous by the ADR Agreement itself.

Drivers are required to be qualified, and hold the certificate for, the relevant modules for the goods they will be transporting. These modules are Core, Packages, Tanks, Classes 1 – 9.

In this article we will discuss the Class 2: Gases module.

What is the Class 2: Gases module

When transporting dangerous goods that are primarily classified as Class 2: Gases, drivers are required to hold an ADR certificate that includes the Class 2 module.

The Class 2 module gives drivers an understanding of the characteristics Flammable Gas, Compressed (Non-Flammable Non-Toxic Gas), and Toxic Gas as well as marking/labelling requirements and dangers including a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion).

The Class 2 module includes:

  • Characteristics of Class 2 and the three divisions. Levels of Danger according to their hazardous properties, as packing groups are not allocated
  • Marking and labelling
  • Why gases need to be compressed, liquefied, dissolved, chemicals/articles under pressure, refrigerated and adsorbed gases or a combination of these
  • Special packing and containment systems
  • Dangers and the precautions to be exercised when transported gases and actions to be taken in the event of an escape of gas
  • Hazardous properties including toxicity, flammability, corrosivity, oxidation and asphyxiation
  • The effects of low temperature on living tissue and other materials (Cryogenic)
  • Correct handling, storage and transportation of cylinders and avoidance of overheating
  • Segregation methods and responsibilities of all persons involved
  • BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion)
  • Flammability limits and liquid to vapour volume ratios
  • Appropriate PPE to include respiratory protective equipment (RPE)

The full syllabus and more details can be found in the ADR Course Guide.

Do I need the Class 2: Gases module

The Class 2: Gases module must be passed by drivers who transport goods classified as Class 2 in ADR. These can include items such as Butane or Propane (LPG) as well as other gases such as Oxygen.

In order to obtain the ADR certificate, at least one Class module must be taken.
