Table of Contents

Background

The ADR qualification is required for drivers who transport dangerous goods. These are goods ‘classified’ as dangerous by the ADR Agreement itself.

Drivers are required to be qualified, and hold the certificate for, the relevant modules for the goods they will be transporting. These modules are Core, Packages, Tanks, Classes 1 – 9.

In this article we will discuss the Class 6: Toxic Substances module.

What is the Class 6: Toxic Substances module

When transporting dangerous goods that are primarily classified as Class 6: Toxic Substances, drivers are required to hold an ADR certificate that includes the Class 6 module.

The Class 6 module gives drivers an understanding of the different dangers each type of Class 6 (Toxic & Infectious Substances) possesses. The module includes information on what is classified as Toxic.

The Class 6 module includes:

  • Marking and labelling
  • Dangers and precautions to be exercised when transporting Class 6 materials
  • Possible subsidiary hazards including flammability, oxidising and corrosivity
  • Entry into the body may be through inhalation, ingestion, absorption, injection and instillation
  • The effects can be either acute or chronic, and the difference between these
  • Category A and B substances for Class 6.2
  • Clinical waste products derived from human or animal treatment and bio-research
  • Segregation methods in particular from foodstuffs, and responsibilities of all persons involved
  • Special Packaging requirements
  • Containment of material and actions to be taken on exposure to Class 6 substances
  • Appropriate personal protective equipment to include respiratory protective equipment
  • Avoiding contamination when putting on and removing personal protective equipment
  • Containment of used sharps
  • The need for rapid decontamination and/or the use of an antidote in the event of exposure to certain Class 6 materials

The full syllabus and more details can be found in the ADR Course Guide.
