Amazon Integrates Largest Electric HGV Fleet to Date
The Largest Electric HGV Order Joins Amazon’s UK Distribution Network
The introduction of electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) into Amazon’s UK logistics operations represents notable progress for transport operators, drivers, and compliance professionals. This move highlights the growing emphasis on decarbonising road freight and the challenges associated with electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure.
Deployment of Mercedes-Benz eActros 600s and eSprinters
Amazon has begun integrating 160 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 electric HGVs into its distribution network. These vehicles will transport over 300 million products annually between the company’s logistics hubs across the UK. In addition, Amazon is set to receive 800 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter electric vans this winter, further supporting its carbon reduction goals.
Charging Infrastructure and Industry Collaboration
Amazon has installed 360kW charging points at all its sites, capable of charging the 40-tonne eActros trucks from 20% to 80% battery capacity in just over an hour. Despite this investment, Amazon emphasises that widespread adoption of electric vehicles in logistics requires continued collaboration between industry stakeholders and government to develop a comprehensive national charging network.
Statements from Industry Leaders
Nicola Fyfe, Amazon Logistics EU Vice President, described the deployment as a major milestone in decarbonising the UK transportation network. She noted the benefits for customers, the environment, and business, while highlighting the ongoing challenge of scaling charging infrastructure.
Heiko Selzam, Managing Director of Daimler Truck UK, praised the eActros 600 as a vehicle designed for companies committed to lasting logistics. He welcomed the trucks’ entry into service as a positive step towards the future of long-haul transport and road freight decarbonisation.
