The Use of In-Cab Technology in HGVs: Driver Perspectives and Implications

The increasing integration of technology in heavy goods vehicle (HGV) cabs has raised questions about driver acceptance and the impact on safety and compliance. Understanding driver attitudes towards in-cab cameras and AI-powered coaching is crucial for transport operators, drivers, and compliance professionals aiming to implement these systems effectively.

Driver Attitudes Towards In-Cab Cameras

A survey conducted by fleet telematics company Geotab found that while 87% of HGV drivers expressed concerns about how in-cab cameras are used, 97% would accept their use if the footage could demonstrate they were not at fault in the event of a collision. This indicates that drivers value the protective aspect of such technology.

Comfort With AI-Powered Coaching

The survey also revealed that 91% of drivers preferred instant audio coaching based on AI analysis of in-cab video, rather than footage being stored for later review. This suggests a preference for real-time feedback that supports driver progress without prolonged surveillance.

Balancing Privacy and Protection

Geotab’s wider study, involving over 3,500 professional drivers across seven European countries, highlighted a privacy versus protection dilemma. UK drivers showed the highest acceptance of dashcam footage for coaching purposes, with 35% recognising its value for professional development and safety.

However, concerns remain regarding:

  • Footage being used out of context (34%)
  • Use of footage for disciplinary action (34%)
  • Data security (32%)

These concerns point to a need for clear policies and communication about how data is managed and used.

Industry Implications and Recommendations

Edward Kulperger, Senior Vice President at Geotab, emphasised that the perception of UK drivers opposing technology is outdated. Acceptance increases significantly when drivers understand that technology is intended to support and protect them rather than penalise.

Improving education around the benefits and safeguards of in-cab technology can foster trust, enhance driver safety, and contribute to safer roads.

Mi Compliance Insight

Transport operators and compliance professionals should prioritise transparent communication and training when introducing in-cab technology. Emphasising the coaching and protective benefits, alongside robust data security measures, can improve driver acceptance and compliance outcomes.
