ADR Training – Class 5 Oxidisers
Background
The ADR qualification is required for drivers who transport dangerous goods. These are goods ‘classified’ as dangerous by the ADR Agreement itself.
Drivers are required to be qualified, and hold the certificate for, the relevant modules for the goods they will be transporting. These modules are Core, Packages, Tanks, Classes 1 – 9.
In this article we will discuss the Class 5: Oxidisers module.
What is the Class 5: Oxidisers module
When transporting dangerous goods that are primarily classified as Class 5: Oxidisers, drivers are required to hold an ADR certificate that includes the Class 5 module.
The Class 5 module gives drivers an understanding of the different dangers each type of Class 5 (Oxidising substances and Organic Peroxides) possesses. The module includes information on how the Oxygen produced from the substances can sustain fires requiring an awareness on how to deal with them.
The Class 5 module includes:
- Characteristics of Class 5.1 and Class 5.2
- Marking and Labelling
- Dangerous and precautions to be exercised when transporting Class 5 materials
- Possible subsidiary hazards including toxicity, explosiveness and corrosivity
- Effects of oxidation on combustion even in the absence of air
- Organic Peroxides containing combustible elements (carbons) and oxygen and the effects of these
- Drivers duties in relation to temperature control for certain Class 5.2 materials (SADT requirements)
- Avoidance of overheating and sources of ignition
- Segregation methods and responsibilities of all persons involved
- Containment systems and actions to be taken on exposure
- Appropriate PPE to include respiratory protective equipment (RPE), and the specific dangers of Class 5.2 and in particular, eye damage
The full syllabus and more details can be found in the ADR Course Guide.
Do I need the Class 5: Oxidisers module
The Class 5: Oxidisers module must be passed by drivers who transport goods classified as Class 5 in ADR. These can include items such as Fertiliser and Dibenzoyl Peroxide.
In order to obtain the ADR certificate, at least one Class module must be taken.
