ADR Training – Class 4 Flammable Solids

Table of Contents

Background

The ADR qualification is required for drivers who transport dangerous goods. These are goods ‘classified’ as dangerous by the ADR Agreement itself.

Drivers are required to be qualified, and hold the certificate for, the relevant modules for the goods they will be transporting. These modules are Core, Packages, Tanks, Classes 1 – 9.

In this article we will discuss the Class 4: Flammable Solids module.

What is the Class 4: Flammable Solids module

When transporting dangerous goods that are primarily classified as Class 4: Flammable Solids, drivers are required to hold an ADR certificate that includes the Class 4 module.

The Class 4 module gives drivers an understanding of the different dangers each type of Class 4 (Flammable Solid, Spontaneously Combustible and Dangerous when Wet) goods possesses. The module also discusses the range of different ways Class 4 goods can ignite including the processes surrounding SADT (Self-Accelerating Decomposition Temperature) and SAPT (Self-Accelerating Polymerisation Temperature).

The Class 4 module includes:

  • Characteristics of Class 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3
  • Marking and Labelling
  • Dangerous and precautions to be exercised when transporting Class 4 materials
  • Possible subsidiary hazards including toxicity, explosiveness and corrosivity
  • Drivers duties in relation to temperature control for certain Class 4.1 materials (SADT and SAPT requirements)
  • Avoidance of overheating and sources of ignition
  • Segregation methods and responsibilities of all persons involved
  • Containment systems and actions to be taken on exposure
  • Appropriate PPE to include respiratory protective equipment (RPE)

The full syllabus and more details can be found in the ADR Course Guide.

Do I need the Class 4: Flammable Solid module

The Class 4: Flammable Solids module must be passed by drivers who transport goods classified as Class 4 in ADR. These can include items such as Potassium, Sodium, Calcium or Fishmeal.

In order to obtain the ADR certificate, at least one Class module must be taken.
