ADR Training – Core Module
Background
The ADR qualification is required for drivers who transport dangerous goods. These are goods ‘classified’ as dangerous by the ADR Agreement itself.
Drivers are required to be qualified, and hold the certificate for, the relevant modules for the goods they will be transporting. These modules are Core, Packages, Tanks, Classes 1 – 9.
In this article we will discuss the Core module.
What is the Core module
When transporting dangerous goods, drivers must be qualified in the primary class of the particular goods. For example, Methanol is primarily Class 3 (Flammable Liquid) – a driver would require an ADR in Class 3. However, Methanol also has subsidiary risks, and is also classified as a Class 6 (Toxic). It is the Core module that gives drivers the basic knowledge and understanding for these subsidiary risks.
The Core module includes:
- The general requirements governing the carriage of dangerous goods
- Information on environmental protection in the control of the transfer of wastes
- Driver responsibilities during the carriage of dangerous goods
- The prohibitions on mixed loading in the same vehicle or container
- Enforcement Action
- Security and ‘High Consequence Dangerous Goods’
- General information concerning civil liability
- Basic knowledge about the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and Respiratory Protective equipment (RPE)
- The administration of emergency first aid to include CPR and recovery position
- Fire Prevention
- What to do in the case of an incident or accident
The full syllabus and more details can be found in the ADR Course Guide.
