Three Lorry Drivers Jailed After M2 Services Violence

Introduction

A recent violent incident involving lorry drivers at a motorway service area highlights the potential for disputes to escalate rapidly, with serious consequences for those involved. Understanding the circumstances and outcomes of such events is vital for transport operators, drivers, and compliance professionals to promote safer and more respectful behaviour on the road.

Details of the Incident

On 28 February, at Medway Services on the M2, a parking dispute between two groups of lorry drivers escalated into a violent confrontation. Bogdan Joja, 32, had stopped his lorry and reserved the adjacent parking space for his father, Traian Joja, 56. However, two men in another lorry parked in the reserved space against Bogdan’s wishes and refused to move when Traian arrived.

The disagreement intensified, resulting in Traian pinning one of the men against his lorry and holding him by the throat. Bogdan, assisted by Simion Rafaila, 25, repeatedly punched the man to the head. The victim fell to the ground and suffered a seizure. His associate was also repeatedly punched to the body. Both victims sustained broken bones and bruising and required hospital treatment.

Legal Outcome

All three men involved—Bogdan Joja, Traian Joja, and Simion Rafaila—are Romanian nationals with no fixed addresses. They were arrested at the scene and subsequently pleaded guilty to affray at Maidstone Crown Court. Bogdan Joja was additionally charged with grievous bodily harm.

Sentences were handed down as follows:

  • Bogdan Joja: 12 months’ imprisonment
  • Traian Joja: 7 months’ imprisonment
  • Simion Rafaila: 7 months’ imprisonment

Official Comments

Detective Constable Lauren Mewett, the investigating officer, described the attack as “needless and violent” and noted the severity of the injuries sustained by the victims. She emphasised how quickly such situations can escalate and stated that the sentences should serve as a clear warning that violent behaviour will not be tolerated.

Practical Advice from Mi Compliance

This case underscores the importance of maintaining professionalism and restraint in perhaps contentious situations, such as disputes over parking at service areas. Transport operators and drivers should be aware that aggressive behaviour can lead to serious legal consequences and jeopardise safety. Mi Compliance recommends that drivers seek to de-escalate conflicts and report any incidents to the appropriate authorities rather than engaging in confrontations.
