Wakefield Lorry Driver Sentenced for Fatal Crash
Introduction
A recent court case highlights the serious consequences of distracted driving for lorry drivers. The incident, which resulted in a fatality, underscores the importance of maintaining full attention on the road to ensure the safety of all road users.
Details of the Incident
On 12 December 2024, Daniel Loft, 37, from Bingham, Nottingham, was fatally injured in a collision on the A46 northbound near East Bridgford. Loft had exited his stationary vehicle when a lorry driven by Colin Longbottom, 63, collided with it. Loft sustained severe head injuries and died in hospital 18 days later.
Cause of the Collision
Nottingham Crown Court heard that Longbottom was distracted by a built-in touchscreen in his vehicle. Internal cab CCTV showed he looked down for prolonged periods and only intermittently glanced at the road, with his eyes off the road for approximately four seconds before the collision. Longbottom admitted during a police interview that he was attempting to turn off his fog lights using the touchscreen and acknowledged his driving fell below the required standard.
Further investigation revealed Longbottom had used his mobile phone to send Facebook messages and make calls shortly before the crash, although he was not using the phone at the moment of impact.
Legal Outcome and Sentencing
Longbottom pleaded guilty to causing death by risky driving on 6 January 2025. On 10 February 2025, he was sentenced to 53 months in prison. Judge Rupert Mayo emphasised the tragic nature of the case and the severe consequences of taking one’s eyes off the road while driving a heavy vehicle capable of causing catastrophic damage.
Impact and Response
Loft’s family has requested privacy following the sentencing. His wife paid tribute to him, highlighting his role as a devoted husband, father, and community football coach. Nottinghamshire Police collision investigator Georgina Luke expressed hope that the case would serve as a warning to other drivers about the dangers of distracted driving.
