Iveco and PlusAI to Deploy Level 4 Autonomous Trucks in Spain
Introduction
The development of autonomous driving technology is set to impact the transport sector significantly. Iveco has announced a new programme to deploy Level 4 autonomous heavy-duty trucks in Southern Europe, marking a notable advancement in commercial vehicle automation. This initiative is relevant to transport operators, drivers, and compliance professionals as it signals future changes in vehicle operation and regulatory considerations.
Programme Overview and Partners
Iveco, in partnership with technology firm PlusAI, will collaborate with Spanish logistics operator Sesé and the Government of Aragon to develop and trial autonomous heavy trucks in Spain. The project will involve two Iveco S-Way trucks equipped with Level 4 Autonomous Driving Systems (ADS), powered by PlusAI’s SuperDrive virtual driver technology.
Testing and Operational Details
Testing is scheduled to begin in 2026 and will span multiple years. During trials, a safety operator will remain onboard the vehicles at all times. The autonomous trucks are expected to operate on freight routes between Madrid and Zaragoza, covering approximately 300 kilometres. This corridor will serve as a real-world habitat to assess the technology’s performance and safety.
Industry Perspectives
Marco Liccardo, Chief Technology and Digital Officer at Iveco Group, emphasised that vehicle automation is a key element of the company’s technology strategy. He highlighted the ongoing collaboration with PlusAI to advance both Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Autonomous Driving Systems (ADS) to support safer and more sustainable transport.
Shawn Kerrigan, COO and Co-founder of PlusAI, noted that autonomous trucks have the potential to improve road safety and transform commercial transport. He stated that extending the partnership to Level 4 operations in Spain demonstrates how autonomous technology can enhance safety, efficiency, sustainability, and supply chain resilience in Europe.
Background and Future Outlook
Iveco Group has been developing autonomous and connected vehicle technologies for several years, including joint Level 2+ and Level 4 testing programmes with PlusAI. This new initiative builds on previous work and represents a step towards real-world deployment of autonomous trucks. Additionally, PlusAI is entering a new growth phase as a publicly traded company following its business combination with Churchill Capital Corp IX.
