DVLA Updates Diabetes Regulations for Commercial Drivers

From 7 November 2025, bus, coach and lorry drivers with diabetes will be permitted to use modern glucose monitoring technology, such as Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems (CGMS), to manage their condition while driving. This update is significant for transport operators, drivers, and compliance professionals as it affects medical fitness requirements and daily glucose monitoring practices.

What’s Changing

Previously, professional drivers with diabetes were required to use finger-prick blood tests to check glucose levels before and during driving. The new regulations allow Group 2 drivers (bus and lorry) to use CGMS devices, which provide continuous, real-time glucose readings via sensors.

This change aligns Group 2 drivers with Group 1 drivers (car and motorcycle), who have been authorised to use CGMS since 2018.

What Group 2 Drivers Need to Know

Group 2 drivers should note the following:

  • They may use CGMS for real-time glucose monitoring while driving. If confirmation of glucose readings is necessary, drivers must safely pull over before conducting further tests.
  • The new rules take effect from 7 November 2025.

The DVLA emphasises that this change aims to improve drivers’ ability to manage diabetes safely on the road.

Implications for Drivers and Operators

The introduction of CGMS for Group 2 drivers offers:

  • Greater flexibility in diabetes management during working hours.
  • Enhanced safety through continuous monitoring, allowing timely responses to glucose fluctuations.

This development has received broad support from medical professionals, road safety organisations, diabetes charities, and the road haulage industry. A DVLA consultation found 89% of respondents in favour of the change.

Mi Compliance Insight

The adoption of CGMS technology for Group 2 drivers represents a positive advancement in managing medical fitness to drive. Operators should update their medical compliance policies accordingly and ensure drivers are informed about the new monitoring options and safety requirements. Training and support may be necessary to integrate CGMS use effectively within daily operations.
